Week 3: “Board Games”

October 06, 2010

Week 3 was my favourite task of the show. I always wanted to work on something on the scale of a billboard but in my own business, it would never be necessary. We were challenged with creating a “new and innovative” 48 page billboard for GSK’s new product: Lucozade Sport Lite.

We got down to business fairly quickly and after talking through some great ideas (note the sarcasm) from Niamh, I came up with the idea of using a water cooler to indicate that Lucozade Sport Lite is now an alternative to water. I felt this idea was strong enough to run with on it’s own but the whole thing grew legs into incorporating a camel into the ad. Bad idea. The following day at the printers, I knocked together an advert I had in mind before the photo team got their pictures back to us. What you didn’t see on the show was me saying to the team that we must be objective about which ad will win the task and forget which took more time. As it turned out, we were basically told that we would have won the task hands down if we’d gone with my billboard. It was even sicker to see the other team head off to Portugal for the night. I nearly puked. The right person got fired in this task and there’s no doubt about it. Niamh was useless in Week 1 and was carried on Week 2 to victory.

Week 2: “Radio Gastro”

September 29, 2010

Week 2 saw us take on a pretty huge task. The first half involved designing and creating a one-day healthy eating menu for UniSlim. It had to meet their critera exactly while being new and innovative. I think we all got a bit annoyed when we got critised for not doing that… I men, we could hardly invent a new meat. “Ya Bill, for lunch we’ve done a whale meat curry.” I don’t think that would have gone down well.

The second part of the task was to create a radio advert and marketing campagin which we then had to present to Today FM and UniSlim. I think we got hard done by for not jumping through Today FM’s hoops and not using their “Drivetime Package”. What you don’t see on TV is how little time we had to do all this. Given the few hours we did have, both teams did an excellent job.

Week 1: “The Hard Sell”

September 21, 2010

Bad news… I’ve been back and forth with the company that actually make The Apprentice and they’ve said that none of the contestants may do a blog. I’m as disappointed as you are but I’m going to upload the episode here every Tuesday so that the people from outside Ireland can catch it.

The task was a difficult one and as it was on a Friday, we should have dropped the corporate sales altogether. It was my own idea to visit car garages as I figured that most garages would stay open until 6pm and that a lot of the owners actually run the showrooms themselves and we could get some face-time with the man who signs the cheques.

My favourite moment from the episode had to be:

Ah Will… At least shake his hand! I also loved his Soccer-style point to the sky celebrations! Next week should be good… A really tough task that both teams have problems with.

Website founder, Kieran Walsh is a contestant on TV3′s “The Apprentice”

September 09, 2010

Meet the men and women preparing for the toughest job interview in Ireland: the ferociously competitive selection process to become Bill Cullen’s Apprentice and land a €100,000-year job. Amongst them is www.WalshEngineering.com website founder, Kieran Walsh. Kieran (28) studied for a degree in Economics and Maths in University College Cork. During this time and through his background in maths, he developed an interest in probability, spread betting and poker. The latter grew into a major interest for Kieran and now, he is best known for such high profile wins as the Irish Poker Championship ’06 and the CPT Grand Final ’09. To date, his tournament winnings exceeds $420,000. Throughout his time as a professional poker player, he was always more interested in commercial business and was involved in several website start ups which ultimately to lead him to the creation and setup of www.WalshEngineering.com.

The Irish Daily Mail quote the following: Another daring contender is 28-year-old Kieran Walsh, who quit University College Cork to become a professional poker player. Undoubtedly his poker face will come in handy when warding off his rivals. While keeping his cards close to his chest regarding a game plan, Kieran admits: “There are about eight people in The Apprentice this year who are better than anyone who’s been in it before”.

The Sunday Mirror say “Kieran Walsh, a Commercial Director from Cork has recently taken over a section of a family business. He says that ever since he was old enough to make money, he has been driven by the challenges in the quest”.

The new series of The Apprentice begins on the 20th September at 9:00pm only on TV3. It will be followed by the “You’re Fired” show and then a brand new show called “At Home with The Apprentices” on 3e.

Kieran will be hosting a blog on the Tuesday after every episode to reveal his thoughts on the task and who really should have been fired. The only place you can find this blog is here at www.WalshEngineering.com.
